Black voters discuss the importance of voting as efforts grow to gain their support

Voters say it's important to them that politicians focus on policies that impact them.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With the race to the White House getting down to the wire, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are fighting for every vote.

That includes the black male vote.

Recently, there's been efforts to gain support from this demographic of voters. Leaders like former President Barack Obama have spoken about the need for their support of proposed policies.

It's got some black male voters like Christian Lee talking about how important their vote is and why voting for someone isn't black and white.

"So while it would nice, be nice to say that the world is not fixated on color, it's still a very big part of American society.  So, you have to take that into an aspect with the policies that are coming forth, but also do read into what is being proposed forward,” said Lee.

Fellow voter Nic Longstreet agreed that voters should vote for the candidate that has policies they agree with.

"People get lost in names and not necessarily policy, and I feel like a lot of people don't necessarily know the actual power and strength of what politicians can actually do versus what they care in school,” said Longstreet.

Groups like the Greater Grand Rapids Chapter of the NAACP are also sharing that message.

President Cle Jackson said voters need to understand how their vote impacts the future of their community.

"They really have to understand the issues. Because the important thing is, how does my vote count and what really matters to me? You know, we got health care on the ballot. We got economic instability on the ballot. We got voting rights on the ballot,” said Jackson.

All men encourage people to vote in this upcoming election.

The NAACP is hosting the Freedom Fund on Friday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are still available. For more information you can visit their website here.
