TOLEDO, Ohio — The body of a 21-year-old who went missing after his canoe capsized in the Maumee River has been identified.
The body of 21-year-old Jesse Babiuch was pulled from the Maumee River on May 3 as crews resumed the search for the missing Toledo man whose canoe capsized on April 30. A police report Friday identified the victim.
A family member told WTOL on Wednesday the body was believed to be Babiuch's.
A WTOL 11 reporter witnessed several TRFD vehicles in the area of Walbridge Park about 4:30 p.m. on May 3. The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department deployed two watercrafts equipped with sonar technology.
Babiuch's family said they last heard from him at 3 p.m. on April 30.
After hours of searching, a "credible target" was acquired and located at a depth of about 15 feet. Divers entered the water and found a body, which was then transferred to the Lucas County Coroner's Officer to be identified, according to a TFRD news release.
Police reports claim this incident was an accident.
According to ODNR, three people were on a motorized canoe when it overturned. The other two people were not injured.
The two people who were on the motorized canoe with Babiuch told police they able to swim ashore following the capsizing but Babiuch was still next to the canoe. They lost sight of Babiuch prior to calling police.
