WATERVILLE, Ohio — A suspicious device being investigated by the Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad Wednesday night near Conrad Park in Waterville is a mosquito net, the city's mayor told WTOL 11.

The bomb squad was investigating "suspicious activity" at a cordoned-off scene by the park and a nearby railroad after authorities responded shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Police said in a report Thursday that they encountered what was described as "two suspicious packages" near the railroad tracks. One package was a plastic tool box making a humming noise, placed over a pan of an unknown liquid. A second device was a type of gas container with a valve and hoses attached to the top. The hoses ran up into a tree, with netting attached as well.

"It's safe. It was a mosquito net," Mayor Timothy Pedro said. "We're all safe in Waterville, Ohio."

Pedro thanked law enforcement for the response and said it was important to be better safe than sorry.

According to a police report, police later determined the traps were used for studying mosquitoes.
