BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green city council member Damon Sherry has resigned from office after accepting a new position with the Wood County Board of Elections.
Sherry, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, was Bowling Green's first openly LGBTQ+ council member when they ran as a democrat and was elected in November 2023.
According to a statement from Sherry, they are resigning after accepting a position with the Wood County Board of Elections as an Elections Administrator.
While in office, they replaced former council member Nick Rubando in representing Bowling Green's First Ward. They were also elected while attending Bowling Green State University as a political science major. According to a BGSU commencement program, Sherry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in spring 2024.
Sherry said they were honored to have represented the people of Bowling Green, and expressed gratitude to the city and its residents.
"Bowling Green is more than just a place where I live - it is truly my home. Here, I have found friends, a chosen family, and a community that has welcomed me with open arms," Sherry said in their statement. "Serving you and working alongside my fellow council members to advance our city's interests has been a privilege, and I am proud of what we have achieved together."
Sherry also said they plan to continue attending council meetings and participating in community discussions from their new position.
Sherry's resignation takes effect on Sept. 6.
