Bowling Green celebrates local businesses during city's first-ever Restaurant Week

From June 17-21, businesses will be donating 10% of their proceeds to the Brown Bag Food Project to help food insecurity.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — For the first time, Bowling Green will be celebrating Restaurant Week.

From June 17-21, businesses will be donating 10% of their proceeds to the Brown Bag Food Project.

The idea was created when business partners and owners of Easystreet Cafe and Call of the Canyon, Tim Emmerich and Ardy Gonyer, took a cue from other communities.

"We had seen other communities do this and have restaurant weeks and we decided it was time for us to get together," Emmerich said. "We have a lot of good food in BG and we just wanted everyone to come out."

Gonyer shared a similar sentiment, explaining their want to help out a good cause.

"We're restaurants, we serve food. They address food insecurity so we thought that it was a perfect fit for this year for the first time out doing it, and they're really involved in the community," Gonyer said. "They've been around for several years and really address a need that is ever more present in Bowling Green and Wood County."

Peg Holland works at Brown Bag in Bowling Green. According to its website, 13% of Wood County is food insecure.

Holland said lately, donations have been low, putting stress on the non-profit's ability to help others.

"We have a lot of people that are in need of food," Holland said. "And we're just welcome to help them out as much as we can."

However, by partnering with the businesses for Restaurant Week, she hopes it will encourage the community to donate and help.

"I'm hoping that we can do this in the future and that we can be the beneficiaries of it. We just really like that we can jump on board to help with something like this," Holland said.
