Bulk drinking water available to Whiteford Township residents impacted by fuel leak

Residents who have been affected by the fuel leak can fill containers at the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Department Station.

MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — Bulk drinking water is now available to Whiteford Township residents who have been impacted by last week's diesel fuel leak.

The Monroe County Health Department said that residents can fill containers at the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Department Station located at 9244 Whiteford-Center Road in Ottawa Lake.

The water tanker will be located behind the fire station and will be available 24 hours a day. Residents will need to bring their own containers to fill. The health department said before use, residents should boil the water if the transport containers they use are not considered for potable use.

The health department said after filling your containers, fully close the valve before leaving. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office will also be patrolling the filling station.

Bottled water will also continue to be available at the same location on Thursday and Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Residents of Whiteford Township who have concerns about the safety of their water supply at their home or business are encouraged to utilize bottled water for drinking, cooking, bathing and brushing teeth. The health department said the decision to use bottled water should be based on the taste, smell, or sight of their water supply.

The county confirmed that the cause of the spill was due to a leak of a diesel tank underneath a Pilot gas station in Ottawa Lake that resulted in leakage contaminating the North Branch of the Ottawa River.
