John Brough served as the department's fire chief for over a decade.

OAK HARBOR, Ohio — The Carroll Township EMS and Fire Department is mourning the loss of their chief John Brough, who passed away May 19. He was 68 years old.

According to a department social media post made Wednesday, Brough was instrumental in the department's founding in 1979; he ultimately worked in the department for 45 years and served as fire chief for over a decade. Brough was also among the first citizens in the township to become trained both as an EMT and firefighter.

The department described Brough's legacy as one of public service, and said its members could continue to follow his example of "service over self."

Brough's obituary states he was born in Port Clinton, graduated from Oak Harbor High School, and was a lifelong farmer, in addition to working for Hansen Industries.
