City of Toledo crews preparing to weather potential impacts of rainfall from remnants of Beryl

The city's commissioner of Sewer and Drainage services says crews are on standby to address any issues with flooding from potentially significant rainfall.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The remnants of former-hurricane Beryl will bring hours of steady, soaking rainfall into Wednesday.

Calvin Harris, the commissioner of Sewer and Drainage Services with city of Toledo, said the department will be keeping crews around longer than usual to make sure they can help if people need assistance.

But there some things homeowners can do now to be proactive, Harris said.

"Make sure that the inlets in front of their house, at the corner, are cleared off," Harris said. "So then if we do get a significant amount of rain, that rain will go down the side of the inlet."

He said making sure trash and grass cuts aren't blocking the inlets is important.

As for being on the roads, Harris said it should be OK to drive if needed, but proceed with caution. He recommends people keep a lookout for high water signs and avoid driving in those areas.

He also advises drivers to avoid viaducts as they tend to have the most water when flooding does happen.

"If we're getting a substantial amount of rain, one inch-two inches of rain, the water doesn't recede as fast because there's only an inlet on each side of the viaduct or the bridge," he said. "So the water goes down a little bit slower."

In terms of basement and street flooding that could happen this, he said they will be prepared for what's to come.

"I think, as long as we're at the inch and a half mark, and I'm hoping it goes down even lower," Harris said. "I think, we'll be fine."

Our WTOL 11 Weather team says most areas could see about 1 to 2 inches of rain.
