Applications open for city of Toledo's third Kid Mayor

Fourth graders in Toledo Public Schools and Washington Local Schools are eligible.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The city of Toledo is accepting applications for its annual Kid Mayor and Council program.

The program, which the city described as an "immersive experience in civic operations" is intended for children interested in democracy and leadership in their community. The opportunity is open to fourth graders enrolled in Toledo Public Schools and Washington Local Schools.

To apply, your student must ask their teacher about applying during the application period, which runs from Jan. 8 to 22.

Appointed students will have the opportunity to present their ideas to elected officials on how to make Toledo a better place for upcoming generations.

This year's Kid Mayor will be the city's third, succeeding 10-year-old Gabby Mukiira of Grove Patterson Elementary. Before Gabby, Evelyn Bush of Glenwood Elementary served as the city's inaugural Kid Mayor. Both worked alongside their 12-person Kid Council to learn about various city departments and the daily operations of Toledo.
