Photo allegedly showing weapon in vehicle near Clay High School was Airsoft gun, superintendent says

The district superintendent said school leaders located the item within an hour of being alerted.

OREGON, Ohio — A photo allegedly depicting a person in a vehicle with a weapon near Clay High School was ultimately determined to be an Airsoft gun and did not pose any threat to students, Oregon City Schools superintendent Hal Gregory said in a message to families Tuesday evening.

School officials, including the resource officer, were alerted to the photo, which allegedly showed a driver with a gun in their lap. The picture was stamped with the words "Clay High School" and "Oregon, Ohio". Community members and students alerted school administration to the picture.

Gregory said the school recovered the gun, which they discovered was an Airsoft gun, in less than an hour of the photo being brought to their attention. It was recovered from a vehicle on campus "without incident". The item was never in the school or around other students, Gregory said, and at no time was there a threat by the individual or perceived threat.

Gregory reminded parents to speak with their children about posting images of weapons online, as they may be perceived as a threat and can cause panic.
