CLEVELAND — One person is dead following an incident at Cargill's Cleveland salt mine, fire sources tell 3News.
The Cuyahoga County medical examiner has identified the victim as 58-year-old Grzegorz Sychla, of Broadview Heights. According to a preliminary report from the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration, Sychla died when a dump truck crashed into a utility vehicle he was sitting in. Further details are not currently available.
"The Mine Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation and does not discuss the specifics of ongoing investigations," the MSHA said in a statement. "There is no estimated completion date for the investigation."
Per officials, Sychla worked at the salt mine for more than 10 years. WKYC has reached out to Cargill for comment and is awaiting a response.
Headquartered on Whiskey Island, the mine itself stretches from Edgewater Beach to Burke Lakefront Airport and goes north for roughly three miles.
