Craig Memorial Bridge reopens, ODOT says

"Long-term rehabilitation of electrical and mechanical components is planned by 2030" for the bridge, according to ODOT Toledo.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Craig Memorial Bridge has reopened to vehicle traffic after an electrical issue and a driver who damaged gates took it out of commission two weeks ago, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

ODOT District 2, which covers Toledo, posted the update to social platform X, the day after it said in a press release that the gates were fixed but a reopening date was still unclear.

A driver, who ODOT described as "reckless," drove through multiple safety gates on the bridge on the morning of July 9, after an electrical communications issue while the bridge was lowering to allow vehicle traffic prevented the gates from raising like they normally do. Authorities have not yet said if a suspect has been identified.

The gates had to be fixed before contractor US Utilities could fully troubleshoot the electrical issue, which involved the bridge's three sets of sensors not properly communicating with each other for the bridge to raise and lower.

Future work on the bridge is planned for the future.

"Long-term rehabilitation of electrical and mechanical components is planned by 2030," according to ODOT.
