Annual Fremont car show is back on after lawsuit threat canceled it

Organizers of the Cruisin the State Street Car Show say they worked with Fremont officials and law enforcement to put a safety plan in place for the event.

FREMONT, Ohio — The annual Cruisin State Street Car Show in Fremont is back on for Sept. 28, with a caveat, after a lawsuit threatened by a local business owner caused it to be canceled, organizers said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

Organizers of the car show, Fremont officials and local law enforcement met and put a safety plan in place for the event, according to the post. However, the event will only have the cruise from 4-8 p.m. as the car show portion has been axed.

Further details about the safety plan are not provided in the post.

The lawsuit, filed by Fremont business owner Tom Kern, expressed concerns over past nuisances during shows, according to event coordinator Mike Dukeshire.

The status of Kern's lawsuit threat is unclear at this time.

"We are hoping that all participants are willing to display cars in a respectful law obeying manner as this is the final attempt to maintain this event," the Facebook post says.

We want to start by thanking the entire community for the support that has been shown for this event. We all do this...

Dukeshire acknowledged last month to WTOL 11 that the event, which is in its eighth year, had issues in the past. He argued that there were only five issues in the seven years of the event, though.

"His (Kern's) concerns were our concerns, but we can't be threatened with a class-action lawsuit," Dukeshire said. "That's not good for our sponsors, that's not good for us, for our community and that's not why we were doing this."

Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez also said he had heard complaints of cars speeding, blocking traffic and doing burnouts in recent years.

Both Dukeshire and Sanchez said the event was important in that it raised money for charities and brought the community together.

"We are actively seeking sponsors for this event if you or your company would like to donate please reach out to Rich Farmer at 419-307-4241.  All money raised will go to local charities!!" the Facebook post added.

Organizers also encouraged people to visit a car show at Conner Park in Ballville Township, a few miles south of Fremont.
