TOLEDO, Ohio — Dennis Hopson has been named the new athletic director at Bowsher High School, Toledo Public Schools announced Monday.

Hopson, a 1983 Bowsher graduate, announced last week he was stepping down as head men's basketball coach at Lourdes University "to explore other opportunities for my career."

Hopson was a standout basketball player at Bowsher before attending Ohio State University. He played pro basketball for 13 years, including five seasons in the NBA. He won an NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls.

Hopson said in a press release Friday from Lourdes University that leaving the basketball program was not an easy decision.

"I enjoyed my time working with coach Janet Eaton-Smith and Dr. Mary Ann Gawelek, who are both no longer at Lourdes, but hired me, along with coach Joann Gordan and the rest of the current staff and athletes," Hopson said. "After much consideration, however, I have decided to explore other opportunities for my career."

As the head men's basketball coach at Lourdes, Hopson helped lead the Gray Wolves to win their first WHAC championship and broke the university's record for wins in a season.

In 2024, Hopson was recognized by College Insider with the national title of "Jack Bennett Man of the Year" award for his commitment to integrity within the sport.
