TOLEDO, Ohio — The intersection of Monroe Street and Huron Street was blocked off late Saturday morning after authorities detected smoke rising out of a manhole on Huron Street in downtown Toledo.
The smoke, which is estimated to be above 300 degrees, had made its way into the basement of Pizza Papalis and The Blarney Irish Pub.
Emergency responders from the Toledo Fire Department said that carbon monoxide was also detected in the closed area.
Workers at the Blarney were told to evacuate the building until the origins of the smoke could be detected. There were no patrons in the restaurant at the time of the incident.
By 4 p.m. the Blarney had reopened for the evening just in time to host fans before the evening's Toledo Walleye game.
"We've been here probably 15 or 16 times. We've been coming since 2019. We probably come see Walleye hockey once a month, so we really like it here," said Walleye fan Ashley Mummert, who was at the restaurant with her family.
A Facebook post by the Blarney says the smoke was caused by an electrical fire under Huron Street.
Both roads were reopened by late afternoon.
