Ex-TPS teacher charged with sexual battery in alleged incident involving student

The Waterville man is accused of having sex with a student while teaching at Bowsher last year, between April and May.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - The former Toledo Public Schools substitute teacher accused of inappropriate conduct with a student has now been charged.

According to court documents, Jason Sybert, of Waterville, had sex with a student last year inside his classroom at Bowsher High School.

Sybert, 41, is currently behind bars in the Lucas County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow morning.

He was initially placed on paid leave by the district after a student came forward with the allegations. He resigned the next day.

Sybert turned himself in to police on Tuesday and was charged and arrested.

He had worked with the district for two years.

TPS released a statement on Monday afternoon.

“A long-term substitute teacher for Toledo Public Schools was placed on paid administrative leave on April 3, 2019 pending the outcome of an internal investigation into violations of district policies and code of conduct for Ohio educators. However, per his contractual rights, this individual chose to resign from Toledo Public Schools on April 4th and forego a formal disciplinary hearing. Toledo Police have been contacted and are aware of the situation.”
