Excitement building across area for Monday’s solar eclipse

Perrysburg held a total solar eclipse festival downtown less than two days from the big event. Maumee's was Sunday and in Tiffin they were busy making wedding cakes.

TOLEDO, Ohio —

Perrysburg

Perrysburg held "The Total Eclipse of the Berg" festival downtown on Louisiana Avenue on Saturday where they welcomed in people from all around the country here to take in the celestial show on Monday.

There was live music, bounce houses for the kids, as well as arts & crafts and all of it was solar eclipse-themed of course. There was even a moon pie eating contest.

It was all designed to build excitement for the once in a lifetime solar eclipse on Monday.

Perrysburg will experience totality for a total of 2 minutes and 13 seconds making the cozy suburb a genuine destination for eclipse watchers.

“I think we had more people that never been to Perrysburg today than we've had. Like we've just had so many people,” said event organizer Brittinee Hontley.

8-year-old Olivia Heintschel, who has a good chance to be around for the next eclipse in 2099, could hardly contain her excitement about the upcoming eclipse.

“I’ve never seen an eclipse before,” she said, with obvious anticipation. "I'm gonna sit up on the roof of the house and just stare at it."

Totality in Perrysburg will begin at 3:11:56 p.m. and end at 3:14:08.

Tiffin

The city of Tiffin has been preparing for, and celebrating, the eclipse all weekend.

But unlike most cities under the path of totality, Tiffin will have another reason for celebration.

150 couples will be tying the knot at the ‘Elope at the Eclipse’ event and that means someone had to make 150 wedding cakes.

The job fell to Kendra's Cakes in Bascom, Ohio.

"It did take a little more effort to kind of put our heads together, what kind of design we wanted to do and then getting all the cakes baked all in one day and next day getting them all frosted. Just a team effort. It took us hours to bake them one day and the next day we frosted them all. It took, 3 or 4 hours to frost them all. Two of us," said Kendra's Cakes owner Kendra Foos.

Maumee

Excitement was also building in Maumee at the Total Eclipse of the Towpath event at the White Street Parking Lot near the Towpath Trail.

ProMedica Toledo Hospital Emergency and Urgent Care sponsored the free, family-friendly event, in an effort to hype up the Monday's eclipse.

Attendees went to yoga classes, purchase eclipse-themed crafts, listened to live music and enjoyed other local vendors.

And it wasn't just about fun but also about education.

"Basically we are giving out information about the eclipse. Why its significant. Some things for the community to do and just bringing everyone together and getting everyone together. Starting spring off right," said volunteer Taylor Palicki.
