FOSTORIA, Ohio — Fostoria police have recovered and identified a car that was found in a reservoir last month while city crews were pumping water out.

Police, along with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and John's Towing in Tiffin, removed the vehicle from Reservoir 4 on County Road 23 on Monday.

Police said the car was identified by its vehicle identification number as a 1991 Mercury with Ohio registration FVR 185, with an expiration tag on the license plate from 1993. FPD said that due to the age of the vehicle and its license plates, there were no records on file with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Upon removing the car from the reservoir, law enforcement was able to examine it further. Fostoria police said that no signs or evidence in the vehicle indicated a crime, other than theft.

According to police, BCI was able to obtain information on the vehicle and found that it had been reported as stolen to the Findlay Police Department in 1993. Fostoria police said that the report listed the vehicle as recovered in 1996, but it's believed to have been when the insurance company wrote it off as a loss.

The last known owner was listed as the Motorist Insurance Company, according to a title FPD said they found from the Seneca County Title Office.

Police said that the Fostoria Records Office and the Findlay Records Department have been working on the possibility of obtaining previous reports or information that may have been filed when the vehicle was reported stolen in 1993.
