TOLEDO, Ohio — The East Toledo Senior Center and Friendship Park Community Center were forced to close Tuesday due to burst water pipes from below-freezing temperatures over the weekend.
The damage caused by the extreme cold is unprecedented and hasn't happened to the East Toledo Senior Center in Point Place in at least five or six years, Executive Director Jodi Gross said.
Regardless, Winter Storm Elliott's impact was substantial and after flooding from the burst pipes started in the kitchen, water was "all over the place inside the building," Gross said.
She said the cost of damages will be split between the senior center and the city. The cost will be finalized after a walk-through to assess the damages, which is expected to be done by the end of the week.
Aside from the kitchen, the burst pipes also flooded the main room where the seniors gather for various activities, Gross said.
Some days, the East Toledo Senior Center does grab-and-go lunches with around 30-50 seniors present. On other days, they do bingo, euchre and Wii Bowling.
"Unfortunately, we can't be in the building and I can't provide those services," Gross said.
The East Toledo Senior will be closed Tuesday through Friday. The seniors that normally attend The East Toledo Senior Center will be served at the Oregon Senior Center until the facility is back up and operational.
The Friendship Park Community Center is expected to open tomorrow, Aaron Myers the Manager of Recreations with the city of Toledo, said.
