TOLEDO, Ohio — In the wake of shootings that killed two people in Toledo Tuesday night, those who knew the victims are speaking out.
Kejuan Richardson and Jae'Juan Reid, both 21, were killed in central Toledo Tuesday.
LaToya Williams, who was Richardson's elementary school teacher, said her former student had been a bright and memorable child.
"When he came in a room, he just lit up. And he lit it up. He knew who he was even at 11 years old," Williams said.
Richardson and Reid's murders mark the 34th and 35th homicides in Toledo this year.
Police officers found the victims just before 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in a car that had crashed on Rosedale Avenue, just west of the Monroe Street and Auburn Avenue intersection. The car had seemingly gone off-road and crashed into a light pole.
Both victims were suffering from gunshot wounds when officers found them.
An autopsy performed at the Lucas County Coroner's Office Wednesday determined that Richardson died from gunshot wounds to the head and neck and Reid died from two gunshot wounds to the head. The coroner's office ruled both deaths to be homicides.
No arrests have been made in the case.
"Let us stand together in our community," Williams said. "If you've seen something, if you've known something, if you've heard something, just come forth. Call the authorities. Don't let another one of our children be senselessly murdered in our community. It is our responsibility to upload the standard of lawfulness and justice."
Friends of the victims also gathered Tuesday night for a vigil at Georgjz419 in Toledo.
Those who were there described the pair as "the life of the party" and said that they will be dearly missed.
