WAUSEON, Ohio — Fulton Lumber and Coal Co. in Wauseon is closing its doors after more than 100 years of serving customers in Fulton County and beyond.
It has been more than a week since owner Doug Vollmer announced the business would be closing. He said longtime customers are what has kept them going for all of these years.
"I'm going to miss the people. We've made a lot of friendships over the years and probably some enemies," Vollmer said. "But, you know, I'm proud of what we've done for the community and for the citizens of Wauseon and surrounding areas."
Fulton Lumber & Coal sells items like lumber, hardware and construction materials.
It was started in the 1920s and was sold to Vollmer more than 25 years ago. He said it's time to hang up the hammer.
"Time to sit back and think about your life, I guess," Vollmer said. "Hope it continues for a while."
Vollmer said they were originally set to close last week, but are currently still open for business. The owner though said business is slow.
"We were going to close the doors at the end of last month but when we got something worked out with this buyer, we kind of kept it going,” Vollmer said.
But moving forward, the legacy of this store in Wauseon will always live on even when the business changes hands.
"I mean, it's going to continue on, just a different owner," Vollmer said.
Vollmer said he's looking forward to retirement and spending more time with his family.
