GoFundMe set up for mother of 3 who was stabbed to death in random attack in Toledo

According to her uncle, the family is trying to raise money for a proper funeral and burial.

TOLEDO, Ohio — New information released Monday from the Lucas County Coroner's Office confirmed the cause of death from deadly stabbing in west Toledo.

Danialle Swan, 28, of Montpelier died from multiple stab wounds to her chest and arms late Saturday night.

Toledo Police say in no way do they believe suspect, Thomas Smith, 24, or victim knew one another before Saturday night.

Smith faced a judge Monday. He's being held on a $1 million bond.

Police are still working to figure out the reason behind the stabbing.

"I can't speculate as to what the suspect's motive may have been. This is highly unusual. Usually, victims and suspects know each other, whether it be outside affiliations or prior relationships. These random attacks are so unusual and it's concerning for citizens in the area and citizens of Toledo," Toledo Police's Public Information Officer Lt. Kellie Lenhardt said.

Thomas Smith was charged with murder after police say he stabbed a 28-year-old woman to death.

The victim's uncle Mark Anthony Swan said his niece was a bright light in this world who was tragically and senselessly taken from her family and three kids.

He said the family is currently working on funeral arrangements and have created a GoFundMe to help with those expenses.

Mark Swan says Danielle's viewing will be March 5 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and her funeral will be March 6 in Montpelier.

Toledo police were able to confirm that Smith has a pending assault case from February of 2020.

According to police, Smith has not been tried on the assault case yet.

Police officials said they responded to the 911 call in four minutes. They said they are thankful to have witnesses' help, but they have a warning for those at crime scenes.

"That is an incredibly dangerous thing to have done. A homicide in 2019 resulted in the death of a witness who attempted to intervene in a robbery. We are encouraging citizens, stay safe, be good witnesses. In this case, it worked out and we are eternally grateful to the witness who did this but it is a dangerous thing," Lenhardt said.
