BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Tuesday marks National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and staff at the Wood County Dog Shelter says there's reason to celebrate.
The shelter is able to house up to 42 dogs on-site. As of Monday, the shelter has 12 dogs either at the facility or in foster care.
But as the weather continues to warm up, Wood County's chief dog warden Jodi Harding said animal shelters will begin filling up with strays.
So, the shelter is hosting a week-long adoption promotion in celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Day to get more animals into permanent homes.
"Typically, our adoptions are $75," Harding said. "We have reduced that to $25 with the $14 dog license that would go with the dog. So for $39, you can get a fantastic family member."
If you're interested, Harding recommends you bring your entire household, even other pets if possible, to acclimate to the new family member before you take it home.
Also, some of the stray dogs may be best fit in a home with no other animals.
Along with getting a few return adopters back to the shelter, Harding hopes the promotion can also bring in some first-time families to adopt from the shelter, too.
"It's a second chance for those dogs, and I swear those dogs understand that and they know that this is my second chance," she said. "To me, personally, I think they're more loyal, they know that they've been rescued and they kind of pay that back to you."
Harding also said the Wood County Dog Shelter is always in need of volunteers to walk dogs and would love to see more foster homes open their doors.
