Grand jury finds no wrongdoing for TPD officers in separate shootings that killed one, injured another

Kaden McCrory and Erica Allen were both shot by officers in April 2024 in separate incidents. Allen died.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Lucas County grand jury found no wrongdoing for three officers who shot two people, killing one, in April during two separate incidents.

According to a grand jury report from the Lucas County Common pleas, Toledo Police Sergeant William Shaner was not indicted in the April 16 shooting of Kaden McCrory. Police were serving a search warrant at a south Toledo home for a robbery parole violation when they said they were confronted by McCrory.

Police claimed McCrory was pointing what "appeared to be a handgun at them," and ultimately shot McCrory once, then tased him "to no effect", then shot him again. Addition investigation revealed McCrory had been holding not a handgun, but a BB gun.

In April, police said McCrory was expected to survive his injuries.

The grand jury also found no wrongdoing for officers Cherokee Tabb and Pat Fisher in the shooting of Erica Allen, a day after McCrory was shot, on April 17, 2024. Police responded to Vance Street in central Toledo, where Allen was allegedly armed with a knife and had barricaded herself in her home with her children.

Police said they shot Allen when she approached her children with a knife. Police said there was no footage of the officer shooting Allen because the SWAT officers who were dispatched to the scene were training at the time and were not wearing bodycams.
