TOLEDO, Ohio — Multiple crews responded to a fire and HAZMAT situation at a west Toledo business Wednesday morning.
Toledo Fire and Rescue emergency crews responded to the 2900 block of Hill Avenue after 9 a.m. regarding a fire at DPI Inc., a wall paneling company.
Crews then closed Hill Avenue in both directions near the building.
A spokesperson for Toledo Fire and Rescue said employees were separating chemicals when a reaction caused a small fire. Haze and smoke from the fire created a HAZMAT situation.
Toledo Fire said no one was seriously injured. Crews did treat four people for headaches from the fumes. They also decontaminated some employees, which the department said is standard protocol.
HAZMAT crews removed the chemicals from the building and were working with DPI to transport them safely from the scene as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The Toledo DPI Inc. plant was scheduled to close all operations Friday, according to a press release, which cited "recent financial challenges" as the reason to close the facility.
According to a document announcing the closure, 76 people were employed at the Toledo plant when the layoffs were announced.
