Health department warns about getting too lax with restrictions in public

Despite COVID-19 case numbers in Lucas County not being a major concern right now, local health officials are cautioning about becoming too comfortable in public.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Despite COVID-19 case numbers in Lucas County not being a major concern right now, local health officials are cautioning about becoming too comfortable in public.

"Cases right now, we're in the single digits when we talk about confirmed numbers every time we look at them," said Toledo-Lucas County Health Commissioner, Dr. Eric Zgodzinski.

In Lucas County, trends surrounding COVID-19 cases are looking promising. Testing opportunities are also in no short supply. So what's the problem? Well, health officials are reminding everyone about the continued importance of social distancing and wearing face coverings.

One of the big concerns the health commissioner has at this point is with everything opening back up, people are becoming somewhat complacent to restrictions and not wearing face masks.

"And now that we're coming out on the other side I see us not really taking a little bit extra precautions to protect us from a future spike," said Dr. Zgodzinski.

The health commissioner said while they are still receiving complaints about area restaurants, the number of calls they are getting has died down. On top of making sure restaurants and other businesses are following state recommendations, contact tracing has also become more challenging as more places reopen.

"During quarantine, we might've had to follow up with maybe four or five people. Now we have one case, lets say it's in a restaurant, now we have to follow up with 15, 20 maybe even 30 individuals maybe even more," said Dr. Zgodzinski.

The health commissioner is reminding everyone to respect each other's comfortability levels when it comes to meeting others in public places.
