TOLEDO, Ohio — When it comes to certain medical conditions, some people can end up in the hospital for weeks or even months at a time.
But Blessed Home Health Care Agency in Oregon delivers care right to patients' homes with the goal of keeping them out of the hospital.
At just 58 years old, Toledoan Paula Davis is already dealing with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD.
COPD is a common lung disease that causes restricted airflow and breathing problems.
In the past, the condition frequently put Davis in a hospital bed.
But life became easier for Davis when Blessed Home Health Care began coming to her home to deliver care.
"They helped me get set up on a machine at night so that I'm able to breathe at night. Without that machine, I'd end up in the hospital without it,” said Davis.
Blessed Home Health Care has been in business since 2013. They say their mission is to allow clients to remain in their homes with dignity and comfort.
Registered Nurse Heather Cimaglia is a clinical manager with Blessed Home Health Care Agency. She says Davis has made remarkable improvement since the agency began assisting with her care.
"We've kept Miss Paula out of the hospital since February, so we're really proud of how amazing she's doing,” said Cimaglia.
Checking Davis' blood pressure and oxygen levels are just some of the many things the nurses do.
One of Blessed Home's main goals is to take the burden of costs off of the family.
The company provides services to low-income clients through Medicaid's home care waiver program.
They also provide qualifying skilled home health services through Medicare and patient's private insurance.
"We handle all of the insurance. We get to make sure that people stay out of facilities and stay out of hospitals and get to be home with their families. And for me, that really is fulfilling and amazing,” said Cimaglia.
With the help of Blessed Home, Davis has managed to stay out of the hospital for almost 8 months, which not only puts Davis at ease, but her family as well.
"It had a good impact on us because my husband and I were just, We were lost for words. We didn't know what else to do with her, or what else to do. And that last time, we are at ease now because she has the help that she needs from Home Blessed,” said Christina Hall, Davis’ cousin.
While Davis is still dealing with COPD she says being able to have a caring staff with her at home just warms her heart.
"It is heartwarming. And they make you feel heartwarming, you know what I mean, Like I said, they make you feel like family. They really do,” said Davis.
