NAPOLEON, Ohio — The Napoleon police and fire departments held their annual "Hoops and Heroes" game Tuesday night at Napoleon High School.
The police and fire unions come together for a fun competition and to find a benefactor as a free will donation, Napoleon police chief David Mack said.
"It's something that gives us a little family competition between police and fire, and someone benefits from that," Mack said.
Each year, the two unions alternate in their choosing of a beneficiary of the game's proceeds. This year, the recipient was Kyle Pettit.
Pettit has been known throughout the community as a mascot at games and performer in school shows.
"He's plugged into Napoleon as a community," Pettit's brother, Andrew, said.
Last year, Pettit was involved in a car accident that left him in a coma for more than a month.
"It was a really scary moment, but we got through it and we're glad we're here today," Andrew said.
It means everything to have the two departments come together for Kyle, Andrew said on behalf of his brother.
"If it wasn't for them, Kyle would probably not be alive standing here today," Andrew said. "It's been a five month journey, and to see him walk and stand, it's been amazing to see the progress that my brother has done."
Kyle and his family want to thank everyone in the Napoleon community for their generosity as he continues on his road to recovery.
