House fire damages home in Perrysburg

The fire took place on Coventry Court near Fort Meigs on Sunday afternoon. One person and a dog were inside when the fire broke out. No one was hurt.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — A Perrysburg house is damaged after a fire broke out on Sunday afternoon on Coventry Court near Fort Meigs.

One person and a dog were inside the home when the fire broke out around.

Both were able to get out safely.

A call to 911 from a neighbor allowed for a quick response time from the Perrysburg Fire Division.

Neighbors say it was a difficult scene to take in.

"It was just a very dramatic scene and experience," said neighbor Haseeb Ahmed.

Ahmed, who lives close by, says that his brother-in-law was getting ready to leave town when they could smell the nearby smoke.

"And we all rushed outside and saw that, indeed, it was already on fire. The SUV was kind of engulfed in flames and was spreading. We were a little bit afraid that the cars might erupt at any moment," said Ahmed.

According to Perrysburg fire, crews got to the scene in time to stop the fire from destroying the home.

"We limited the damage as much as we could. The guys did a great job of stopping the fire," said Captain Nate Burtscher of the City of Perrysburg Fire Division.

As for the cause of the fire, the State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation.

"We've had fires like this before, but each of them is unique. It really depends on the origin, and right now we can't determine that," said Captain Burtscher.

But regardless of the cause, everyone agrees that it could have been much worse. The homeowners were on vacation.

"I think it was a big relief because, of course, property can be replaced but lives can't," Ahmed said. "And so that's the most important thing that everybody made it home OK."

There is severe damage to the house, but the Perrysburg Fire Captain says it's not a complete loss.
