FREMONT, Ohio —
Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez started a movement earlier this week when he stood alone on a corner, protesting in the wake of George Floyd's death.
His passion spread and grew to one of the biggest protests that city has ever seen. On Wednesday, hundreds in the community gathered to join him in the call for justice.
"People deserve to have their voices heard. I am so proud to be the mayor of this city, I am so proud to be out here with our community with the people in our city. (There are) 17,000 people in the city and you see the turnout. I'm just again lost in words (...) they are rallying in a way that people should be rallying around the country," Sanchez said.
People for Peace and Justice in Sandusky County hosted the rally. Organizers said the demonstration stuck out from other protests because police officers and protesters marched together side by side for peace.
"People are being killed by those who have been paid to protect us and to serve our community. And I'm happy here, in Fremont, that we have a pretty solid community and we work well with the police,” said Dr. Regina Vincent Williams, NAACP president in Fremont.
“It is the energy of the community, we just had to say we're doing it word to word, and social media, and by going onto Toledo website and it spread like wildfire,” People for Peace and Justice leader Josie Setzler added.
Leaders in the Fremont community adamantly said this is just the beginning as they plan to hold more rallies.
