Southeast Michigan zoo explains changes in their operations

Indian Creek Zoo on Consear Rd. in Lambertville says they will no longer be open to the public on a daily basis.

LAMBERTVILLE, Mich. — A local zoo is making big changes to their operations and wants to ensure the public it has nothing to do with recent citations they have received from the USDA.

Indian Creek Zoo on Consear Rd. in Lambertville is explaining the changes they are making to their operations.

According to a Facebook post on Saturday, the zoo will no longer be open to the public on a daily basis but will rather focus more on personal and education focused activities that are booked in advance.

The zoo is currently booking animal encounters for 4 people or less with a variety of animals including Lemurs, Sloths, Wolves.

The zoo will also be booking birthday parties, field trips and corporate and charity events beginning in March of next year.

The zoo also says the changes they are making are unrelated to citations they received from the USDA for incidents in 2020 and 2021 which they say were corrected and for which they say they paid a fine.

According to a USDA citation, in 2020, the zoo was cited to improve the structure housing primates after an olive baboon was alleged to reach its arm through a gap in the door and take hold of the handler’s hand before biting them.

The USDA also cited the zoo after an African crested porcupine escaped its enclosure, and multiple animals were observed to need veterinary attention.

The zoo says they received a 3 year license from the USDA to operate the facility in January 2023.

Indian Creek Zoo has been in operation for 10 years.
