PERRYSBURG, Ohio — It’s been a popular summertime festival for 22 years, but organizers say that world events are forcing them to cancel the festivities this year.
On Friday, the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo in Perrysburg announced that they are canceling this year’s International Festival citing the suffering of people in Gaza.
The festival was scheduled for the weekend of September 28 and 29.
A release from the Islamic Center reads as follows:
“The slaughter of innocents in Gaza has left our community grieving and unable to celebrate at such a somber time. With tens of thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning and praying, not a moment for celebration. We continue to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Palestine and call upon this humanitarian crisis to end.”
The International Festival is known for featuring food from over 20 ethnicities as well as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the Islamic Center.
