TOLEDO, Ohio — A juvenile was injured after what police described as an accidental shooting in west Toledo Wednesday evening.
According to a Toledo police report, officers responded to the 3800 block of Watson Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. regarding a person shot. Police said two juveniles were playing with a firearm in a bedroom at the residence when one of them was accidentally shot in the leg.
The victim suffered a non-life threatening injury, police said, and was transported to the hospital for treatment by a parent.
The ages of the juveniles were not specified in the police report. No charges were mentioned.
Toledo police made a social media post Thursday morning, encouraging the public to secure their firearms to prevent shootings.
"Secure your weapon - save a life," TPD wrote in the post. The department added that they offer free gun locks to the public, which can be acquired by contacting community services at 419-245-1119.
According to Project ChildSafe, an organization dedicated to household gun safety, secure storage of a firearm is the number one way to prevent firearm accidents, thefts and misuse, and also functions as a method of suicide prevention. Gun storage comes in a variety of forms, the organization's site explains, including gun cases, lock boxes and electronic holsters. Be SMART for Kids, a similar organization, also touts gun safety.
