TOLEDO, Ohio — WTOL 11 evening anchor Kalie Marantette took home a prestigious local award at the Press Club of Toledo's 2024 Touchstone Awards Thursday night.
Marantette won in the Digital Video/Television Hard News category for her investigation into David Broadway, a contractor accused of scamming senior citizens out of thousands of dollars for home improvement jobs he did not fully complete.
"I want say thank you to all the people who came forward to share their stories with us. Our series has led to police agencies and community members from around the country speaking up about their experience with David Broadway. He has been going from town to town selling the same scam and this story has spread the word, preventing more victims from giving up thousands of dollars to him," Marantette said. "I am so grateful for WTOL 11 and our managers who allow us to go after people like David Broadway and others who cause harm in the community. A big shout out to Brian Dugger and Eric Rerucha for their help with this story, it wouldn't have been possible without them and I am so lucky to be a part of such an incredible investigative team."
The scam accusations go as far back as 2006.
Toledo police issued an arrest warrant on a theft by deception charge for Broadway in September of last year.
WTOL 11 received a tip that year that Broadway was doing similar scams in the Indianapolis area.
