BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — A 4.0 earthquake was recorded just off of the Lake Erie coast near Eastlake Monday and although this was over 140 miles away, the seismic activity was registered in northwest Ohio at Bowling Green State University.
BGSU was once an active member of the US Geological Survey, but now staff member William Butcher keeps up his own readings with a newer, modern device called a raspberry shake.
His readings, along with dozens of other amateur seismographs are constantly feeding data along with the official geological survey seismographs.
The majority of the readings Butcher sees is passing trains, but there's no mistaking the earthquake this morning.
Additionally, William said anyone can buy the equipment he uses online to track the geological activity where they live.
"There are several good reasons to. One of them is to be aware of what might be going on in your area. Because they can occur anywhere," he said.
