Lake Township fire chief resigns

Barrett Dorner resigned on May 10 after holding the position for about one year and four months. Trustees will name an interim fire chief on May 21.

WALBRIDGE, Ohio — Lake Township Fire Chief Barrett Dorner resigned from his position last week to pursue other opportunities, township administrator and police chief Mark Hummer confirmed to WTOL 11.

Dorner resigned on Friday, but his official last day is June 4, Hummer said.

Deputy Fire Chief Dave Henninger will assume Dorner's duties until township trustees name an interim chief at their meeting on May 21.

Dorner, previously the Portage fire chief, was appointed to the Lake Township position in January of 2023 to replace retiring fire chief Bruce Moritz.

During his tenure, Dorner oversaw efforts to bolster the fire department for the future.

Voters in November of 2023 rejected a levy that would have brought in $1.2 million to the department, which could have hired five more full-time members to help staff the department 24/7. The department had three full-time members along with multiple volunteer firefighters.

Lake Township trustees in January of 2024 then approved the creation of a citizens' review committee to help establish the department's future.

The department had also considered a merger with the Northwood and Rossford fire departments.
