Restrooms, grandstand reopen at Lenawee County Fairgrounds one month after vandalism

Adrian police continue to look for those responsible for vandalizing the fairgrounds on June 8.

ADRIAN, Mich. — In June, WTOL 11 shared a story about the bathrooms and a section of the Lenawee County Fairgrounds being vandalized.

Now, both areas have been re-done thanks to efforts from Lenawee County businesses.

"It's so humbling to know that there are still kind people out there," said fairgrounds Office Manager Heather Downs. "You don't see it. You hear about it, but you don't see it, and until something like this happens to you or comes close to home, you don't really know how you're going to react, but it's definitely very humbling."

One month ago, the men's bathroom at the fairgrounds was a total wreck with every toilet, urinal, and mirror being destroyed by currently-unknown vandals, as well as damaged mirrors and toilets in the next door women's bathroom.

Meanwhile at the grandstand, a section of railing was damaged, altogether ringing up a bill in the thousands.

"We had almost $5,000 worth of plumbing repairs that had to be done here," said Andy Carver, vice president for Adrian Mechanical Services (AMS).

Carver's company was one of a handful of local businesses who pitched in to help repair the damages.

In this case, AMS helped to replace large parts of the bathrooms, including urinal bowls.

Other companies that helped include Maple City Glass, Krieghoff, and Peerless Supply, who all pitched in to help replace parts, glass, paint, and other needed touches.

"It was in the thousands (the total bill)," said Downs. "I really don't have an exact number yet, but it was definitely in the thousands. "

Fortunately, the fairgrounds did not have to pay a single cent because all proceeds were donated to help rebuild the structures.

"I think it really speaks for itself," said Carver. "If you're in a bigger city, you probably don't have stuff like that, but a local, small, rural community, everyone is willing to pitch in and help. They grew up here, they wanna help, they want to see this fair succeed and happen every year for their kids and their kids' kids."

Despite the help shown by local businesses, the investigation by Adrian Police continues with no suspects being arrested at the time of this report.

According to Carver, the look this gives the Adrian community is not one to be proud of.

"I think it's pretty childish, it's not funny to anybody, and it's just hurting themselves and their community," said Carver.

Life continues on and as the fair opens up on July 20, Downs says she is confident that this type of situation will not happen again.

"We're very confident," said Downs. "We have people here all the time, all of our cameras are up and running. I don't think people realize that we actually have cameras throughout the whole fairgrounds, so we're very confident everything will be fine."
