'They're my American family' | Northwest Ohioans open their doors to host LPGA golfers during Dana Open

Scott Bollin and Julie Caris have been hosting golfers for many years now. For them, the golfers are extended family they look forward to seeing every summer.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The LPGA Dana Open brings in professional golfers from all over the world.

Every year Scott Bollin and Julie Caris open the doors to their home to host professional golfers for the tournament week.

Over the years they've hosted multiple golfers. However this year, they're hosting their biggest group yet.

"Three this year. We got a full house, that's for sure," Bollin said.

One of the golfers, Ilhee Lee is from Korea, and this is her 12th year in this tournament.

Lee decided she wanted to stay with a family to help get over her language barrier.

"Learning English was the most important thing for me for the first few years so I try to stay in more housing to pick up more English," Lee said.

Lee, Bollin and Caris have made their place a home away from home for her.

"My whole family is in Korea. They're my American family and I've been staying with them since 2010, so they're my uncle and aunt," Lee said.

It's been 14 since and they've never looked back.

"When she first came to us, she didn't understand our jokes, she didn't understand the things that we said," Caris said. "By the third year she was here, she was joking back with him and making jokes with him."

Since then, Lee's relationship with her host family has blossomed. She and the couple can understand each other and carry on full conversations. It was challenging at first but it grew with time.

Caris said they felt the need to host these women to help them out, acknowledging female golfers get paid a lot less than the men.

The couple said it's a great time for everyone as they spend valuable time together and make memories that will last for a lifetime.

"They love it here, we love having them and I think they like coming here," Bollin said. "We plan dinners, we go to the restaurants. Julie cooks a lot for them."

Lee said she continues to learn new things every day with her host family.  She said she learned yesterday about fishing, tacos and margaritas.
