Local group working to end gun violence in Toledo reacts to Thursday shootings

Two separate incidents within hours of each other left a toddler wounded and another person injured by gunfire during a violent night in Toledo.

TOLEDO, Ohio — On Thursday, a 4-year-old was shot and police are still looking for the person responsible.

In a separate incident later in the night, another person was shot with non-life-threatening injuries in west Toledo.

A local group is calling for more legislation on guns and access. They are demanding that something be done so they are stepping up to try to help.

Moms Demand Action said stopping gun violence is something they are trying to push. With Thursday's shootings, they said it's important to do something now.

"It's frustrating. It's disheartening," Donna Malone with Moms Demand Action said.

According to Toledo police, the 4-year-old boy was shot in the lower rear-end and another person was shot in the leg in the shooting in west Toledo.

"It's a dangerous time when there are teens and preteens who have really easy access to guns," Malone said.

A TPD spokesperson said it's important to report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood and that people should always trust their instincts. TPD said if something doesn't feel right or a situation appears to be getting out of hand, call the police.

Malone said various things contribute to the gun violence problems in communities.

In Toledo, Moms Demand Action volunteers, along with other organizations, have been working with the mayor's office on neighborhood security and engagement.

"Coming up with a five-year comprehensive plan to address gun violence and all precursors to gun violence," Malone said. "Which is poverty and not having good guidance."

Malone said despite the recent shootings, there's still hope.

"There's all sorts of things that are going on that are healthy and teach kids about responsibility and sense of community," Malone said. "So we're just working in a lot of different areas."
