TOLEDO, Ohio —
One local principal continued his end-of-year tradition for his staff members.
Every year, during the last week of school, Greenwood Elementary School Principal Bill Colon grills a meal for his staff to show his appreciation for all that they do.
"This is a tradition I've been doing for 22 years," Colon said. "I've been principal here for 17 years."
He said he hopes it is a time when teachers can sit back and have a great meal to end their year.
Colon grills chicken and corn with his homemade barbecue sauce.
"This is my special chicken barbecue sauce," Colon said. "I make the recipe myself. Lots of secret ingredients go into it. They seem to like it."
The cooking is a labor of love for Colon. He said each piece takes about an hour to cook. He precooks the chicken in the oven and then grills it. He puts his secret barbecue sauce on it and after some time on the grill, it's ready to be eaten.
Colon taking time to cook for all the teachers shows his commitment to the teachers, visual art specialist Amy Hannan said.
"Really makes us all feel super special," she said.
Hannan said every year the celebration has gotten better and better.
"It's a great little treat at the end of the school year to get you through those last couple of days," Hannan said.
Colon said that with everything the staff does is for the kids, this is an opportunity to give back to them, and it's a tradition that he said will continue until a day when he's no longer in education.
