Turning lemons into lemonade: Local Roots Juice Co. locations stay open despite construction errors

Construction crews hit water lines at both the Perrysburg and Sylvania locations on the same day, hours apart.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Local Roots Juice Co. is dealing with not one, but two water main breaks: one at its Perrysburg location and the other at its new Sylvania location, which had just opened on Saturday.

Ashley Balester, the owner of Local Roots, said that in both cases, construction crews who were working on projects in front of the businesses accidentally hit water lines on Monday, just hours apart.

"Yesterday, I'm here in Sylvania training my team, having a great day and I get a message from one of my employees in Perrysburg that they accidentally hit a water line and we have no water. So I scrambled to say you know, 'Okay, let's close down the shop, clean up and we'll have to reopen and figure that out tomorrow,'" Balestar said. "And then, just about two hours later, a construction worker walked in to Sylvania and then handed me a tag that said, 'We're going to shut off your water in ten minutes and you'll be on a boil advisory for the rest of the day and the next day.'"

Balester said she purchased the building for the new Sylvania location at 5441 Main St. in February 2023 and has been working toward opening ever since, after many requests from customers to open a location in Sylvania.

"It's always been on my radar, when I found this building for sale. Gosh, it's been a year and a half by now," said Balester. "We bought the building back in February 2023, so it was a really long process to get to this point, just opened Saturday, so we're really excited to be here."

Balester said both locations had to stop offering menu items on Monday, except for the premade, pre-bottled juices. The Perrysburg location at 306 Elm St. has since reopened.

But she does not believe the Sylvania location can reopen until at least Wednesday when the water boil advisory is set to expire.

"I have faith that both of them are going to be a success," said Balester. "I already know a lot of people are really excited we're here in Sylvania, so hopefully one little hiccup won't put a damper on things."

The Perrysburg location is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Sylvania location is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
