At least 44 horses killed in Ohio barn fire, officials say

One person was injured and taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Their condition is unknown at this time.

LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio — At least 44 horses are dead after a barn caught fire Saturday afternoon in Logan County, Richland Township Assistant Fire Chief Jason Johns said.

Firefighters were called to Brant Performance Horses on State Route 638 in Belle Center around 12:15 p.m. for reports of a fire. When crews arrived, they saw a 60,000-square-foot barn fully engulfed, CBS station WHIO reports.

Multiple area fire departments were called to assist in battling the fire.

“[The] whole building was not safe to go into. There are living quarters inside. They had a horse arena inside, and it was all fully, fully involved...We could not make entry,” Johns told WHIO.

As of Sunday evening, Johns said 44 horses were killed. That number may change as recovery efforts are made.

One person was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. They were later transferred to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Their condition is unknown at this time.

The barn was declared a total loss, according to Johns. Two businesses, Brant Performance Horses and Priest Performance Horses operated out of the barn.

Both businesses lost most of their horses.

It’s unclear what caused the fire.
