TOLEDO, Ohio β Did you hear a loud boom Wednesday afternoon in the northwest Ohio or southeast Michigan region?
That was the sound of a fighter jet reaching supersonic speeds and breaking the sound barrier, resulting in a sonic boom, a spokesperson for the 180th Fighter Wing confirmed to WTOL 11.
The sonic boom happened during a functional flight check Wednesday afternoon, the Swanton-based wing of the Ohio Air National Guard said.
The testing was scheduled to occur between 1:30-2:30 p.m. and the potential for a sonic boom was anticipated, the fighter wing said.
According to the 180th, "a functional check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance on the aircraft, putting the aircraft through strenuous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems of the aircraft function properly and ensuring mission readiness, before putting the aircraft back into operational rotation."
Breaking the sound barrier normally happens over an altitude of 30,000 feet, the 180th said, but residents beyond Wednesday's testing region of Toledo and Bowling Green may have heard, or even felt, the resulting boom.
