TOLEDO, Ohio — Workers with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities are looking to possibly strike if talks aren't successful in the coming weeks.
There are about 160 workers in the union that could strike because they haven't had a contract with the board in about six months.
Nabil Shaheen, the community outreach and communications director with the LCBDD said negotiations have continued through the summer and fall and management hopes to reach a deal soon. Shaheen said this union makes up about half of their workforce.
"Management remains hopeful that we don't have to come to that point but at the same time, plans are in place that if we reach that we would be ready to have as little disruption as possible to the services we provide to individuals," Shaheen said.
Shaheen said there are two unions within the board, but not every worker is in a union.
The board has not received a notice of a strike yet. If the union decided to strike, Shaheen said they would have to file that with the state employee relations board, who then would tell the board.
"We still have this week and next week to hopefully continue that conversation and come to a good conclusion," Shaheen said.
Shaheen said he can't think of a strike the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities has had in recent memory.
WTOL 11 was told by a worker that there is still another vote to be made before giving notice of a strike and if it were to happen, it wouldn't be until after the New Year.
Shaheen said there are plans in place to take care of the 4,400 people the board provides services to if a strike happens.
