Lucas County Board of Elections navigates power outage during early voting

Despite a power outage at the Lucas County Board of Elections, early voting continued under floodlights and generator power Thursday.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Early voters cast their ballots under floodlights on Thursday at the Lucas County Board of Elections.

A power outage happened Thursday morning on the board of election's west Toledo campus. But a generator was able to power the early vote center, offices, the absentee area and warehouse, Lucas County Board of Elections Director LaVera Scott said.

The first priority was to get early voting up and running during the outage, Scott said. Early voters checked in and cast their ballots as usual, except for floodlights throughout the area.

“We definitely have had voters in here most of the morning. I think the beginning of the morning was a little slow, but I know some people said that they heard things about there being power outages here so they weren’t sure they could come," Scott said. "But I think the message is definitely out there now that we are open and ready to take care of voters.”

All machines and computers worked during the outage, according to Scott. The outage was resolved Thursday afternoon.

It is unclear what may have caused the outage.

WTOL 11 has reached out to FirstEnergy regarding the power outage, but has not yet received word from the company.
