Local animal shelter looking for families to host 'Thanksgiving sleepovers' with adoptable dogs

Get in the giving season spirit by hosting a furry friend for the Thanksgiving holiday. The foster program is available for residents in Lucas and Wood counties.

TOLEDO, Ohio — It's the season for giving thanks and a local dog shelter is looking for foster homes for the upcoming holiday.

Lucas County Canine Care & Control is hosting a "Thanksgiving Sleepover" event for the many adoptable dogs currently housed at its shelter. Interested individuals or families can sign up to host a dog for the Thanksgiving holiday and the foster program is available for residents of Lucas and Wood counties.

The best gift you can give a homeless dog is some time away from the shelter, especially during the holidays, when LC4 suggests fostering "your own professional turkey taster."

The shelter will pair any interested sleepover hosts with dogs that will be the best fit. Most will be medium to large adult dogs, as smaller dogs and puppies are adopted more quickly.

Interested fosters should bring proof of current vaccinations from a veterinarian for any dogs at home and dog license for Wood County residents. Fosters should also bring any dogs or children that will share the sleepover experience to ensure everyone gets along well.

Every dog will come with a container of food, leash and collar, and a goodie bag for the sleepover.

All dogs fostered and adopted from LC4 are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and up to date on flea, tick and heartworm prevention.

If you decide a foster dog is a perfect fit, you can give your foster a forever home.

Adoption fees will be waived for any foster families who choose to adopt their sleepover guest and a dog license can be purchased at the time of adoption for $25.

Over 87 dogs and puppies are available for adoption at LC4 as of Wednesday.

Foster dogs can be picked up Nov. 20-22 and dropped off Nov. 26. For more information and to sign up for the Thanksgiving Sleepover event, visit LC4's website at this link.

Lucas County Canine Care & Control is located at 410 S. Erie St. in downtown Toledo.
