Lucas Co. commissioners vote to furlough more than 200 county workers

Four other workers will be laid off in an effort to balance the budget amid the coronavirus pandemic.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Lucas County Commissioners voted to furlough more than 200 county workers, and lay off four more employees as they work to balance the budget on Monday.

The furloughs will affect 216 people in the commissioners department, including the commissioners themselves. Each employee must take five furlough days between June 8 and December 19.

The board also voted to lay off the director of business services for the department of planning and development, the business services coordinator for the department of planning and development and the deputy clerk of the board of commissioners. Those layoffs will take effect June 8.

A support specialist in the office of budget management will also be laid off on June 29.

Commissioner Tina Wozniak said the move is just phase 1 of possible cuts, and they are preparing for possible other cuts that could be needed.
