Local mail carriers taking extra precautions to deliver mail in extreme heat

Toledo mail carrier Rachelle Roy says her customer's kindness gets her through the extreme heat.

TOLEDO, Ohio — It's been an uncomfortably hot week in Toledo with temps in the upper 90's.

People are advised to limit the amount of time they spend in the sun this week but it is not that easy for some people.

53-year-old Rachelle Roy is a Toledo mail carrier trying to stay cool while doing her job.

"Somedays, like yesterday, I had to work 12 hours in 90-degree weather," Roy said.

On Tuesday, Roy had more than 500 houses to deliver mail to. She said she does a few things to help her beat the heat such as staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen and wearing certain clothes.

"They tell you in the summertime to wear light colors so that the air will flow so it'll be nice and cool and comfortable while you're out here working," Roy said.

Roy has lupus so she prioritizes avoiding direct contact with the sun as much as possible by layering up on clothes.

But even with the extra steps and caution, Roy said it's the kindness of her customers that really keeps her feeling OK working in these conditions.

Malinda Johnson, a Toledo resident, said it's important to take care of the people who work to deliver your mail no matter the weather. She passes out water bottles to Roy whenever she brings her mail.

"She's just a nonstop super 'she-ro' so anytime she needs water, I'm gonna be her water girl," Johnson said.

Roy said she is very appreciative of the people who help make her day a little easier.

"You can say, 'She can bring her own water to work, she knows what she's doing,' but to be that extra added help in our day, oh that's nothing but God," Roy said.
