Man accidentally shoots girlfriend while preparing to clean firearm in Lenawee County

According to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office, the 19-year-old man accidentally shot his 16-year-old girlfriend as they prepared to clean a .22 caliber rifle.

LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. — A teenage girl was sent to the hospital after her boyfriend allegedly accidentally shot her in Lenawee County on Sunday night.

According to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office, they received a call just before 10 p.m. from a 19-year-old male who said he had accidentally shot his 16-year-old girlfriend.

Crews responded to the 13000 block of Packard Road in Medina Township and found the teenage girl had sustained a gunshot wound to the wrist and abdomen. She was transported to a Toledo area hospital by air ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The sheriff's office detective bureau said that all signs indicate that the couple was preparing to clean a .22 caliber rifle when it accidentally discharged and struck the victim.

The incident remains under investigation according to the sheriff's office.
