TOLEDO, Ohio —
A man died while in the custody of the Lucas County Sheriff's office on Friday.
Rashid Mustafa, 58, was arrested after deputies responded to a domestic violence call at 1800 North McCord Road.
Captain Ron Collins with the Lucas County Sheriff said that responding deputies had no physical contact with Mustafa, who was taken into custody without resistance. Collins said he is unsure if Mustafa was intoxicated while being arrested.
Reportedly, Mustafa was in the sally port, which is a secure entrance, when an officer noticed he became unresponsive when he was being transported before booking. Collins said officers gave Mustafa two doses of Narcan, which he was unresponsive to.
Collins said the decision to administer Narcan is case-by-case, and he is unsure if officers had a reason to believe Narcan would be helpful here. According to the captain, there are no negative impacts of Narcan if Mustafa did not have any drugs in his system at the time it was administered.
The Lucas County Sheriff's office said the present officers removed Mustafa from the vehicle he was being transported in and placed him on the ground in the booking area, where they began life saving measures.
Mustafa was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead.
According to the Lucas County Coroner's office, Mustafa's cause and manner of death is still pending further investigation.
Captain Collins believes the officers involved did the right things.
"I've seen a little of the video, the body cam video, and it seemed like everything was good there on their end," Captain Collins said. "It was just a part where something happened to the individual that we're not sure of yet."
Captain Collins said the department is waiting for the ruling from the coroner's office to continue an investigation. He said BCI is not investigating the case.
